Many Nepalese students aspire to further their education in the United States. The United States, which is often seen as the leader of the free world, has a plethora of top-ranked educational institutions and universities that offer internationally recognized degrees.

The United States, the nation of dreams and chances, provides high-quality educational possibilities for students from all over the world. The United States has monopolized the attention of most study abroad seekers, whether it is for the quality of education or the professional prospects after graduation. Let’s look closely at the world’s most popular higher education destination.

Study in USA – Educational System Of The United States

Nepal and the United States education systems have some resemblance and contrasting features. In Nepal, for example, we have 3-years and 4-year bachelor’s programs. Bachelor’s degrees in the United States, on the other hand, last no less than four years. As a result, it is critical to comprehend the American educational system and determine your place within it.

High School

Our educational system in Nepal uses “board exams”, in which students undertake the same tests conducted by a board of education or a university. The SLC board exam is administered in Nepal at the end of grade ten.

The SLC, also known as the “iron gate”, is highly regarded. Students usually enroll in a Plus Two, A-Levels, PCL, or Intermediate level program after SLC.

In the United States, high school comprises grades nine to twelve. Further, every school is autonomous, and pupils in the United States do not take board exams.

A student who has finished Plus Two, A-levels, Intermediate Level, PCL, or a similar program can be compared to a high school graduate from the United States system.

Undergraduate Studies

In Nepal, we had a two-year bachelor’s curriculum. Many 3-year bachelor’s programs, 4-years bachelor’s programs, and even longer ones are now available. Bachelor’s degrees in the United States, on the other hand, are classified as “Undergraduate” programs.

In the United States, students who have completed twelve years of education are entitled to enroll in undergraduate programs. Each of the four years of bachelor’s studies is given a name: freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior years.

The associate’s degree is another type of undergraduate education available in the United States. A community college associate’s degree is a two-year program. Community colleges usually serve the local area in which they are located.

The cost of a year of college tuition is usually substantially cheaper than the cost of a year of education at a four-year college. Students who pursue an associate’s degree can transfer to a four-year institution or university in the United States to pursue a bachelor’s degree after graduation.

As a result, students pursuing bachelor’s degrees in the United States have two choices. They have the option of enrolling in a community college and then transferring to a four-year bachelor’s program. These two possibilities should be carefully considered by students.

You may discover that attending a community college is less expensive, but scholarships are sometimes tough to come by after you transfer to a four-year institution. Additionally, community colleges may lack housing, forcing students to reside off-campus.

Graduate Studies

In Nepal, we have post-graduate degrees and M.Phil. that are unavailable in the United States. In the United States, master’s and doctoral studies are both referred to as “Graduate” studies. A master’s degree typically takes two years to complete after completing a four-year bachelor’s program, while a Ph.D. takes four to eight years to complete.

Why should you study in the United States?

Students opt to study in the United States for a variety of reasons. Quality, choice, and value are a few amongst them.

Quality

The United States has some of the best schools and universities in the world. They are known for its high-quality programs, teachers, facilities, and resources all around the world. Accreditation systems for higher education in the United States are in place to ensure that quality requirements are met.

Choice

The United States higher education system offers the most diverse range of institutions, academic and social settings, entry criteria, degrees, and subjects of study in the world. In the United States, there are currently over 4,000 institutes for higher education.

Value

If you think of a degree from the United States as an investment in your future, it’s a wonderful deal. College fees vary greatly, and some outstanding scholarships are available from colleges and universities.

Prerequisites For Studying in the USA

Studying in the United States of America is a huge decision, and you should think about whether it’s right for you. Consider the following elements, which we refer to as prerequisites for studying in the US, to see if you’re a good fit.

Studying in the United States of America is a huge decision, and you should think about whether it’s right for you. Consider the following elements, which we refer to as prerequisites for studying in the US, to see if you’re a good fit.

Funding

It is costly to study in the United States. In the United States, colleges and universities cost between $12,000 and $65,000 annually. A bachelor’s degree usually takes four years to complete, a master’s degree takes two years, and a Ph.D. program takes four to eight years. You will need to apply for a scholarship if you do not have this amount of money.

Academic Background

Your prospects of admission and scholarship at US colleges and universities improve if you have an excellent academic record.

English skills

In order to get into the States, it is essential to have a firm grasp of the English language. Students should be able to speak fluent English to get into America.

Standardized Exams

TOEFL is required by most colleges and universities in the United States. SAT or ACT is also essential for some undergraduate programs. GRE or GMAT scores are required for several graduate programs.

Student Visa

This is required for travel to the United States. Learn more about student visas and how to ace your visa interview at USEF’s “Student Visa Info Session.”

Procedures To Apply for United States Colleges and Universities

When we speak to degree-granting institutions delivering higher education in the United States, we use the terms “school”, “college”, and “university” interchangeably. We’ll use the word “college” to keep things simple.

You should be applying to institutions in the United States for 12-18 months before you want to begin your studies. If you are an undergraduate applicant (applying for a bachelor’s degree), beginning your application process in the first semester of Class 12 can help you avoid a gap year between Class 12 and the start of your undergraduate program in the United States. Graduate applicants, such as those seeking a master’s or doctoral degree, should begin their application process 12-18 months in advance.

Why Does Applying to American Institutions Take So Long?

You will need to fulfill each college’s application deadline in addition to carefully researching and selecting universities, preparing for, and taking the standardized exams. Some deadlines are eight or nine months before the start of class, especially for competitive colleges and colleges that provide good scholarships.

The autumn semester (classes begin in August or September) and the spring semester (classes begin in April or May) are the two semesters for which you can apply for admission (classes start in January). Because it is the start of the academic year, all colleges offer admission in the fall.

Spring admissions are not available at all colleges. If you’re looking for a scholarship, October is the best time to apply (generally, not many scholarships are available in spring). The application deadline varies depending on which semester you are applying for and which college you are interested in attending.

#1. Attend a USEF Group Advising session.

These two-hour workshops, generally offered on Friday mornings, teach you everything you need to know about the application process. On Mondays, sign up for the free Group Advising session.

#2. Choose as many colleges to apply to.

Make your decisions using USEF’s library and Internet resources. You must seek for colleges that are a good match for you. Consider factors such as your subject of study, scholarship, cost, location, prospects, competitiveness, and admission requirements as you conduct your research.

Applying to five to ten carefully selected institutions will give you a better chance of acceptance than applying to one or two. You can apply to more than ten universities if you want, but make sure you send quality applications to all of them!

#3. Obtain Application Forms for Colleges.

On the colleges’ websites, you can find application forms. Application forms, as well as eligibility and application requirements, are available for free and are simple to acquire.

#4. Register for the standardized tests and take them.

All students are required to take the TOEFL (some colleges also recognize IELTS), an English language proficiency test.

All undergraduate applicants are firmly to take the SAT (Reasoning Test) or ACT. Both examinations assess your English and math capabilities; the ACT also assesses your science abilities. The SAT Subject Assessments, which are subject-specific tests that demonstrate to U.S. colleges that you have skills in a given subject, are also highly recommended by USEF.

Good SAT/ACT and SAT Subject Test scores will be crucial, especially if you are applying to competitive universities or seeking scholarships. Furthermore, many American institutions demand the submission of a SAT/ACT score in order to be considered for admission. As a result, you should take not just the TOEFL but also the SAT/ACT and SAT Subject Tests.

In addition to TOEFL, USEF suggests that graduate applicants take the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) or the GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test). The GMAT is often taken by students applying for an MBA or comparable degree, while the GRE is taken by all other graduate applicants.

The GRE/GMAT, like the SAT for undergraduates, is not required by all universities, but strong results will increase your prospects of admission and scholarships. It’s best to register at least two months ahead of time to study for these tests; ensure that you set adequate time to prepare.

#5. Send in your college applications.

By the deadline, colleges must have received your entire application.

#6. Once accepted, you get an I-20.

An I-20 includes information about you, the college, and the amount you must pay each year. To apply for a student visa in the United States, you’ll need an I-20.

#7. Applying for a student visa using the finest I-20.

When applying for a student visa at the US embassy in Kathmandu, you will need to identify one I-20.

Nepal’s Best Academic Locations in the United States

All of the well-known institutions are evenly distributed across the United States and may brag about prestigious institutions. The top 100 QS best student cities include cities such as New York, Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Atlanta.

These cities provide opportunities for foreign exposure, industry engagement while studying, and crucial professional connections, among other things.

The United States is a cosmopolitan country where children can learn about many cultures and lifestyles, allowing them to grow as global citizens. Boston is known as the United States’ student capital, with over 20% of students coming from other countries.

Like any other country, each city has its own set of living expenditures. If students plan their stay and lifestyle carefully, their time in the United States will be both pleasurable and enriching.

Health Care for Nepalese Students In the USA

In the USA, healthcare is a somewhat pricey business. Unfortunately, if you don’t have insurance, getting sick will cost a lot to treat. Consider getting a suitable plan depending on your activities and health unless you are already protected by your spouse’s employer’s insurance or a comparable arrangement.

The government does not require international students entering the United States on an F1 visa to have health insurance. However, the institution you are attending would primarily require it. It is occasionally advised that you buy insurance even if your school doesn’t need you to have it.

The main lure of studying in Japan from Nepal is the academic setting, which allows students to learn about cutting-edge technologies and gain knowledge that contributed to Japan’s extraordinary postwar economic boom. Japanese universities and higher education institutions can provide course studies or research programs in any discipline, be it Japanese literature, international business administration, electronics, or medicine.

In Japan, the proportion of pupils who continue to junior colleges and universities for standard courses is also relatively higher (56.2 per cent). This number demonstrates the high level of education in Japan. Many higher education institutions, including universities and junior colleges, are well furnished with superior research, computer, and library facilities, enabling students to conduct their studies in a top-notch setting.

Higher Education In Japan

These days, a lot of students travel abroad to further their education. The pupils are travelling to numerous nations. The United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom are amongst the most popular.

Start your journey in Japan, which is undoubtedly the best country to learn about science, technology, and finance. Nepalese students who study in Japan can pursue their technological dreams or goals.

You will learn not only technology while studying in Japan but also modern ideas, values, and interpersonal respect. Japan is recognised for being the safest nation on the entire globe. As a result, living and studying there is more peaceful and fear-free.

Japan has spent the majority of its annual budget on technology, science, and pharmaceutical research, as well as the development of its education system, which gives education to all citizens of the country without regard to caste or socioeconomic status.

Why Should Nepalese Students Go To Japan?

We could practically list 100 reasons for you to study in Japan, but we won’t get too into them now. But some of these explanations will be provided.

Cultural Experience

When you study in Japan, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in a culture that will appear foreign to those of us from Nepal. The culture is a fusion of eastern customs and western technologies. East Asian culture is deeply ingrained, and the region’s pop culture is astounding. Many students use Manga and anime to learn about Japanese culture.

Education and Business

One of the best education systems is found in Japan. The nation is renowned for producing technical labourers through high-quality education. In terms of technology, Japan is even in front of America. Therefore, it would be pretty impressive to IT students and computer engineers.

Some of the top tech businesses in the world, like Toyota, Nikon, Sony, Hitachi, Canon, etc., are headquartered in the nation. The country’s blend of technology and tradition is also rather potent. In Japan, a good education is also reasonably priced. Nepali students don’t have to worry about it because college tuition is reasonably priced in the nation.

Employment

In Japan, students are permitted to work part-time. You are given a set number of hours each week and are paid enough to live comfortably. This is beneficial because the side money will enable you to make it through in this nation.

Safety

Japan is a highly secure nation. Low crime rates and generally courteous behaviour are the norms. Japanese people lead hectic lives and have no time for rumours. The food is fantastic, and the city offers a respectable social scene. You don’t really need to worry about discrimination because racism is also extremely rare.

How Can Nepalese Students Apply To A Japanese University?

Students are often accepted into Japanese universities twice a year. Students have the option of enrolling in the fall semester or the spring semester (Nov-Apr)(Mar-Sept). You must begin the application process in November if you wish to start in the spring semester. Similarly, you begin the procedure for the fall semester in March. When applying to universities in Japan, you must provide the following documents:

College application form

Personal Statement Letter

High School or a University

Graduation Certificate

Certificate proving passed standardized tests like TOEFL, SAT, GRE, etc

Letter of Recommendation and a photocopy of your passport

You might visit your local consultancy and then approach them for instructions.

Studying In Japan From Nepal

Most students initially participate in a 12- to a 15-month Japanese language course. Once they are proficient in the language, they can next enrol in academic studies at several Japanese institutions of higher learning. Students interested in studying abroad in Japan must know that they will first take a Japanese language course before moving on to their primary field of study.

After arriving in Japan, a prospective student typically initially enrols in a Japanese language school. In many cases, they spend one to two years studying Japanese and related courses at the language school before taking the university admission exam.

Therefore, selecting a Japanese language school is crucial for potential students. In a similar way, studying in the USA from Nepal has mostly monopolized the recognition of those seeking to study abroad.

There are two Japanese language institutions for international students who aspire to attend a Japanese university for either undergraduate or postgraduate courses.

#1. Private colleges offer preparatory Japanese language courses for international students

Private universities that cater to international students offer regular courses that fall under the School Education Law’s definition of the university curriculum. These courses include preparatory Japanese language instruction. These classes are designed to give foreign students who want to enrol in junior colleges, undergraduate or graduate programs at universities, or both, as students or researchers, foundational education in the Japanese language, Japanese society and culture, and other relevant topics.

The Japanese language, society and culture, and other fundamental topics are among the subjects taught; these are often delivered in Japanese. However, some institutions provide courses in English. Students who enrol in these specialized programs offered by private colleges have the residency status of “College Student.”

Sixty-six private universities and junior colleges provide preparatory Japanese language courses for international students. Each international student should carefully consider their goals for studying in Japan, their field of study, and their future plans, or what they want to do once they have finished the prerequisite course before choosing the program that is most appropriate for them. Students who continue attending the same university as the one providing the preparatory Japanese language classes may benefit from specific privileges and procedures, such as a waiver of the admissions selection process, depending on the institution.

#2. Establishments offering Japanese language instruction to visitors from outside Japan

Foreigners who want to attend Japanese universities or other educational institutions should first think about enrolling in a Japanese language school that offers Japanese language courses as a prerequisite for their undergraduate or graduate studies. There are several different kinds of these language institutions, such as senshu gakko (specialist training schools) or senmon gakko (vocational colleges), as well as other facilities like kakushu gakko. If that’s the case, prospective overseas students are advised to check the language school of their choice is a Japanese language institute that has been officially designated by the Ministry of Justice and is listed in the Ministry’s pertinent announcement by visiting the Ministry of Justice’s official website, which is linked below.

Foreign students may enter Japan with the resident status of “exchange student” if they are enrolled in one of these authorized Japanese language schools.

Cost Of Living In Japan

Tuition Fees

The fact that both domestic and foreign students must pay the same tuition is the most excellent thing about Japan. In the first year, admission fees are generally charged by Japanese schools. In the first semester, the cost is approximately 50,000 Yen. About $7,000 (or 7,50,000 Yen) will be required for the first year. The price is slightly higher for public universities; it might reach $8,000.

In a similar manner, private universities charge about $15,000 each year. However, costs may vary from one school to another. For instance, the top-tier vocational college Senmon Gakko will set you back roughly $11,700. Technical degrees in fields like medicine, engineering, and the arts are slightly more expensive than those in humanities and business-related fields.

Living Costs

You must also invest in living expenses in addition to paying for your education. This covers supper, lodging, electricity, and transportation. The city in which you are staying has an impact on the cost of living as well. You might expect to pay less in a small town than in a major metropolis like Tokyo.

The cost of living is primarily determined by where you live, so you may save a lot of money if you can find a lovely apartment for a fair price. It’s not entirely accurate to say that Japan is very expensive. When you consider the quality, the food is relatively affordable here, and you can also find good electricity and transportation services.

Students Working In Japan

Can college students work in Japan?

In general, students on student visas are not permitted to work. However, if their work won’t interfere with their studies, they are allowed to work up to 28 hours each week.

How long can students in Japan work?

You can only work up to 28 hours per week while you’re a student. Students may also work a total of 112 hours in a month. Nepalese students can work 8 hours a day if your university gives them long-term breaks or vacations.

CONCLUSION

Because of its high standard of education and affordable cost of living, Japan is a fantastic choice for Nepali students. You don’t need to demonstrate a sizable amount of money in your bank account to enrol in a good school in Japan, in contrast to nations like America and Australia.

Additionally, the cost itself isn’t too high. If you wish to ease the financial load, you can also apply for grants and scholarships. Working part-time can also assist you in lessening your financial burden.

It means the Government is actively participating in the educational scene.

As for quality maintenance, the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRISOS) makes sure that the international students are getting their educational facilities on the same par with the native students. Let’s take a look at the educational system in pieces for clarity:

Vocational Education and Training (VET)

Not everyone finds the standard educational system comfortable. For students who want to develop their skills and knowledge for specific employment, VET courses are there to aid you in your destination. Registered Training Organizations (RTOs), Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions and a few private colleges provide these kinds of peculiar training programs. These courses cover a slightly different course pattern than the mainstream system, including hospitality, secretarial skills, construction and engineering, nursing, accounting, and community work.

Higher Education

For higher education, you can choose from the 41 Australian universities. That is a lot of choice facility if I must say. Of the total numbers, three are private. They are Bond, Torrens, and Notre Dame. Similarly, there is Carnegie Mellon, a US-based university and University College London, which is a UK-based university as suggested by the name. They have their campuses in Adelaide, which lies in the Southern part of Australia.

All these universities, along with other higher education facility providers, include a wide range of courses and programs that students can choose from according to their qualifications and requirements. Choices include science, humanities, management, engineering, law, and health, to name a few. Currently, Australian institutions position themselves as the World’s leading education providers with the help of their well-designed multi-disciplinary courses and graduate employability.

Although no single course counts as the most important one, there are some popular courses, as seen from the recurring course choices. Australia offers more than 120 courses under the English language dropdown. We have researched some of the popular ones and would gladly like to share them with you guys:

Humanities and Social Work

Justice and Law

Business and Accountancy

Nursing and Midwifery

Education and Teaching

Marine and Environmental Science and some pathway programs

Science and Engineering

Digital Media and Information Technology

All of these courses extend up to three years of minimum course time. Master’s Degree generally does not take more than two years. The Doctoral Degree is a three years course, though.

When to Apply?

So, we have acquired knowledge of the beneficial factors of the Australian educational system and also looked at the preferred course groups, but what are the intake systems? As it seems, the country welcomes students in two intakes. The first-semester students usually have intakes in February and March, whereas the second-semester programs on June, July, and August.

This is the basic format that applies to maximum service providers; however, some institutions might follow the trimester systems. Don’t panic; we have the information on those kinds of colleges too. They welcome their fresh students in February, July, and November. As for VET providers, they usually have intakes at the interval of two months.

Language Proficiency Requirement

Abroad study means you have to meet their requirements first. Since Australia has a high percentile of English Speakers, you must pass an English language proficiency test to get enrolled in one of their universities. Remember, a passing test mark is mandatory for Nepalese students as we need to continue our studies in English. Some of the major tests which are okay for course enrollment and visa application are:

IELTS: International English Language Testing System

TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language

PTE: Pearson Test of English

CAE: Cambridge English-Advanced

The pass scores might allow you for a visa application, but different education providers have different entry requirements. Courses such as Nursing, Law, and Education usually have a higher requirement threshold. For those who are unable to meet their needs, they have ELICOS or the English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students as a reliable option.

GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant)

A student can qualify himself as a Genuine Temporary Entrant and convince the Department of Immigration and Border Protection to grant him/her a student visa. To get such a privilege, the student should show a genuine interest in studying, learning the Western ways, and returning home after the completion of studies. The intentions should be clear to convince the authorities.

Some of the factors considered by the department as a part of the GTE requirement are:

Unfavorable circumstances in the home country

Positive immigration history of the applicant

Some potential conditions in Australia for the applicant

Intentions of parents, legal guardians, or married-intentions of the spouse can cover the applicant’s chances in case he or she is a minor.

Value of the intended course to the applicant’s future.

Any other reason for the applicant to leave Australia after course completion.
