How EMI is Calculated
Nepal banks use the standard EMI formula:
Where:
- P = Principal loan amount (in NPR)
- R = Monthly interest rate = Annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100
- N = Loan tenure in months
EMI = [50,00,000 × 0.008333 × (1.008333)240] / [(1.008333)240 − 1]
EMI = NPR 48,251 per month
EMI Examples by Loan Type
| Loan Type | Loan Amount | Interest Rate | Tenure | Monthly EMI | Total Interest |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home Loan | NPR 50,00,000 | 10% | 20 years | NPR 48,251 | NPR 65,80,240 |
| Car Loan | NPR 15,00,000 | 12% | 5 years | NPR 33,347 | NPR 5,00,820 |
| Personal Loan | NPR 5,00,000 | 11% | 3 years | NPR 16,369 | NPR 89,284 |
*These are indicative calculations. Actual rates and terms vary by bank and individual eligibility.
Understanding Your EMI Results
When you see your EMI calculation, here's what each number means:
The fixed amount you pay every month until the loan is fully repaid. This includes both principal and interest components.
The total cost of borrowing over the entire loan tenure. This is the amount you pay beyond the original loan amount.
The sum of your original loan amount plus total interest. This is the total cost of the loan.
A month-by-month breakdown showing how much of each EMI goes toward principal and how much toward interest. In early years, interest constitutes a larger portion; in later years, principal dominates.
Factors That Affect Your EMI
Four variables control your monthly payment:
Higher amounts mean higher EMIs. Consider making a larger down payment to reduce the principal and lower your EMI.
Even a 0.5% difference matters significantly. On a 20-year home loan, a 0.5% lower rate saves approximately NPR 3,000 per month and NPR 7.2 lakhs over the loan tenure.
Longer tenures reduce EMI but increase total interest. A 25-year tenure instead of 20 years on a NPR 50 lakh loan reduces EMI by approximately NPR 4,000 but adds NPR 18 lakhs in total interest.
Higher down payments reduce the loan amount. Most Nepal banks require 25-30% down payment for home loans and 30-40% for vehicle loans.
Fixed vs Floating Interest Rates
| Feature | Fixed Rate | Floating Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Rate stability | Remains constant throughout loan tenure | Changes based on Base Rate (BR) adjustments |
| EMI predictability | EMI remains unchanged | EMI may increase or decrease if BR changes |
| Current advantage | Protection if rates rise | Benefit if rates fall |
| Best for | Risk-averse borrowers who prefer certainty | Borrowers who can handle EMI fluctuations |
Base Rate (June 2026): 4.47% to 5.08% depending on the bank. Banks add a margin (typically 1-3%) to the Base Rate to determine your final floating rate.
